Australia has completed a trial of grid-forming battery energy storage for system security services, according to Energy-Storage.News. Akaysha Energy, developer of the Waratah Super Battery, is calling for commercial contracts to be signed within two years to move the technology from trials toward commercial use.
The trial provides evidence for the use of grid-forming storage in power systems with high shares of renewable energy. Akaysha's call also highlights the next challenge: a completed technical trial does not itself establish the commercial arrangements needed to deploy the technology as a system security service.

Contracts could give storage developers a route to offer system security services commercially. The timing and terms of any agreements will matter for how quickly the technology moves beyond the trial stage.
The two-year timeframe is Akaysha's proposed window, not a confirmed deadline for signed agreements. Further announcements on contracting and deployment will indicate how the trial translates into commercial projects.
