China's installed new energy storage capacity reached 167 GW, with 435 GWh of energy capacity, by the end of September 2026, according to the National Energy Administration. Installed capacity rose 63% year on year, while utilization and storage duration also improved.
Together, the power and energy figures imply an average rated storage duration of approximately 2.6 hours across installed capacity. This ratio describes the relationship between capacity measures, not how long storage systems actually operate in each cycle.

The reported improvement in utilization suggests that the expansion is being accompanied by greater use of storage assets. That matters for assessing how much installed capacity contributes to managing electricity supply and demand, although the aggregate figures alone do not show how utilization varies across systems.
The results also point to improving grid capacity to integrate green energy. The longer-term contribution of storage will depend on how utilization and duration continue to change as capacity expands.
