Teradyne Robotics and Sereact have announced a partnership combining Sereact’s Cortex physical AI platform with Universal Robots collaborative robots to automate returns handling in logistics and retail. The companies have already deployed hundreds of UR collaborative robots in Europe for unstructured returns tasks.
Cortex uses a vision-language-action model trained in NVIDIA Isaac Sim and supported by Jetson Thor. The collaboration brings this AI platform together with collaborative robots for a specific operational application: handling returned goods.

The focus on unstructured returns is central to the partnership’s relevance. For this application, the practical question is how consistently the combined system can interpret and act on varied items and presentations. If it can handle that variation reliably, it could extend automation to tasks that would otherwise require more manual intervention.
The reported deployment of hundreds of robots establishes that the application has reached operational deployment. That scale alone, however, does not establish processing speed, handling accuracy or financial returns. For logistics and retail operators assessing similar systems, useful measures would include the range of items handled, the frequency of human intervention and performance under changing workloads.
The clearest signal is the application of physical AI to a defined returns-handling task. Its broader relevance will depend on whether reliable performance can be sustained across different returns environments and whether the systems can fit effectively into surrounding workflows.
