The protocol upgrading the China-Peru Free Trade Agreement took effect on November 1, 2026. It updates provisions covering rules of origin, customs procedures and trade facilitation, and sanitary and phytosanitary measures.
An official from the International Department of China's Ministry of Commerce said the protocol will help lower bilateral trade costs and improve supply chain efficiency, providing a more supportive framework for Chinese companies expanding into Latin America and organizing cross-border supply chains.

Rules of origin determine how goods qualify for treatment under a trade agreement, while customs and trade facilitation provisions affect procedures involved in moving goods across borders. Changes in these areas could therefore influence both compliance work and the time and cost associated with trade.
The effect on individual shipments will depend on the applicable provisions and how they are implemented. For businesses handling goods subject to sanitary or phytosanitary requirements, the practical impact will also depend on how the upgraded measures apply to their products.
